Alkalines
Caustic soda: liquid (25% w/w solution – 50% w/w solution) and solid (flakes or pearls)
It is the most common alkalic product for industrial use. It is used in alkalic cleaning procedures, in the food industry (eg edible olive production), at wastewater treatment to increase the pH, etc.
Floco Sodalum
It is a 30% w/w sodium hydroxide solution which additionally contains 10% aluminium hydroxide. It can be used to regulate (increase) the pH with a simultaneous coagulation action due to the aluminium cations. Although the concentration of sodium hydroxide is 30%, its alkaline action is equivalent to the 50% sodium hydroxide solution due to the additional hydroxyl radicals coming from aluminium hydroxide.
Calcium Hydroxide
It is the cheapest product used in industry to regulate (increase) the pH. Its disadvantage is the dust formation during the preparation of the dispersion, due to the very fine grained powder form.
Disinfectants
Sodium hypochlorite solution
It is the most common disinfectant in water and wastewater treatment. It is used at the first and the last step of water treatment at the drinking water treatment plants. It is also used at the last step of wastewater treatment.
Acids
Citric acid
It is mainly used for membrane cleaning at MBR systems and in food industry as acidulant and preservative.
It is supplied in powder form and in solution 33 – 50% w/w.
Sulfuric acid
It is used in battery production, in phosphoric fertilizer production and to regulate (decrease) the pH. The concentrated sulfuric acid (95 – 98% w/w) is the most corrosive acid in the market.
Hydrochloric acid 31-33% w/w
It is used for rust cleaning and for descaling (eg for the tubes of a boiler) and to regulate (decrease) the pH.
Acetic acid
It is used as an acidulant in the food industry.
Phosphoric acid
It is used as a source of phosphorus at wastewater treatment plants.
Reductants (dechlorinators)
Sodium metabisulfite
It is available in powder form and in 30 – 40% w/w solution.
Ferrous chloride solution (divalent iron)
9% solution w/w in divalent iron cations.
Hepta-hydrate ferrous sulphate (divalent iron)
Powder product, 20% w/w in divalent iron cations.
Bleaching agents
Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide solution, 50% w/w.
It is used as a bleaching agent and as a disinfectant.
Moreover, it is one of the three basic reactants of the FENTON process (Advanced Oxidation Process), together with divalent iron and sulfuric acid. The method is used at the treatment of “hard” wastewaters, as for example the decomposition of the polyphenolic compounds during the olive wastewater treatment.
